A Gilded Cage is Still a Cage
Jason makes a face at the delicate clothing laid out for him to wear, opting instead for a sensible pair of pants and a light robe (the robe simply a concession to the modesty that the Sultan demands) before he slides his feet into his sturdiest pair of slippers and hurries from his bedroom to the courtyard.
As the only heir to the sultanate -- and the only child to a very protective father -- Jason had never been outside the walls of the palace. The courtyard was as close as he ever got to freedom of movement. He knew every flagstone and planter, every path through the gardens, every plant and fountain. He sighs and slips outside, feeling the warm morning sunlight on his face. It might be a paltry freedom, but it was still better than being confined in the palace at lessons.
"Dam-i-an..!" Jason calls out, stetching out the name just slightly, musically.
Damian bounds out of the small orchards, almost barrelling into Jason's legs. Jason laughs and dodges, throwing his arms around the big cat's neck as he skidded to a stop. Jason buries his face in Damian's ruff.
"Hello, my friend," he says softly, trying to ignore the surge of unhappiness as he recalls that Damian is his only friend.
Damian's chest rumbles with a purr, and he bats gently at Jason with one big, soft paw. He's been trained to keep his claws retracted.
"Oh..." Jason rolls his eyes. "Fine, fine, I'll stop sulking and give you attention!"
Damian narrows his eyes just slightly, lifting his chin and looking smug. There. All was right with the tiger's world.
